History of Hellesdon Horticultural Association

The Society began as an Allotment Society shortly after the 2nd world war.  As the Society became more popular, it was decided to give the Society a new name to reflect the wider interests of members and became Hellesdon Horticultural Association in 1953.

Originally based at Hellesdon High School, Hellesdon Horticultural Association moved to its current home at the Hellesdon Community Centre following building of the Centre in 1959 where the Society continued to enjoy growth during the next two decades. During the early 1980s there were approximately 400 members.

A number of outstanding speakers have addressed the Association over the years.  These include former Technical Director of 'Gardening News', Mr. Geoff Amos and nationally recognised organic gardening expert Bob Flowerdew.  In 1982 the Association had the honour of acting as “East Anglian Host of Mastermind in Gardening” organised by the B.B.C. in conjunction with Gardening News magazine.

In recent years the growth in other leisure pursuits and building of housing and flats with little or no garden has led to a decline in member numbers.  Despite this it is still an active participant in the local community in Hellesdon, with over 100 members and well attended meetings.
